A powerful search engine, capable of understanding the individual ‘reasons’ that motivate any search and using these reasons as a set of tools to segment and cluster the content of the BBC archive. We call this approach “pragmatic reading paradigm” because it considers the reading process not as a mere acquisition of information but as the reader’s attempt to fulfil his current expectations about the subject matter of his readings. It does not merely focus on what the user is reading, but investigates the reasons why he is reading a particular document. Each user is unique and needs addressing as an individual rather than as a mere virtual consumer. Although not possible to profile every user, we believe we can understand their general purpose and predict what their content needs may be.
