Results from the London Innovation Lab 2007

At the end of the London Innovation Lab 2007, the following teams were selected by BBC commissioners for further development:

Heartscape - Limitless Innovations
Community Moderation - Ymogen
Radio 1/You - Somethin’ Else

Also, WordBank were invited in to pitch their project again, as the arrival of their first child during the Lab meant they couldn't pitch at the end of the week! As excuses go, that's a pretty damn good one...

Congratulations to all the projects above, and huge thanks to all the teams for making the week so rewarding for everyone involved.

London Lab starts...

2 down, 2 to go - we've just started the 3rd of the four BBC Innovation Labs we're doing this year. Earlier this month, we spent a week working with 10 Scottish teams in Aberfoyle, and a week at the Swinton Park Hotel in Masham, N Yorks with 10 teams from across North England. After a week to return to the office and catch out breath, we're at the Baliffscourt in Climping, W Sussex, for the London Lab.

Halfway through this year's Labs programme, there are some similarities to last year's Labs, and some new wrinkes to the experience as well. We've got more varied briefs this year, from a broader range of BBC commissioners, so this has created more variety amongst the projects and teams on the Labs. This seems really healthy, and is creating some interesting exchanges and collaborations during the week.

The increased number of commissioners has also changed the dynamic of the Labs - we've got around 5 commissioners from the BBC turning up halfway through each Lab, and it means that the way the week works has changed a lot. Last year, with one generic brief and only two commissioners, all the teams developed pretty much in parallel, and the structure of the week focused gradually towards the final pitches on Friday. This year, the different needs and perspectives of the commissioners effectively splits the week in two - the first two days we're encouraging everyone to explore and challenge their idea from a variety of perspectives, then to present their emerging thoughts to the commissioners on day 3 to get more specific advice and guidance for the final pitches. This then sets the way the teams work for the last 2 days - some teams have to do more work on proving the technical aspects of their pitch, whilst others will be focusing on user scenarios or BBC contexts.

The positive outcome of involving more commissioners is a higher success rate - 7 out of the 10 ideas from Scotland have been selected for further development by the commissioners, and 6 out of 10 from the North England Lab. This is much more than last year, when we averaged 3/4 per Lab. We'll post the details of the succesful projects at the end of all four Labs.

its also great seeing such a variety of talent from indies across the UK - particularly in Scotland and the Northern Regions that hadn't participated in the Labs. There's some teams here on the London Lab that we've seen from last year- Ymogen and Limitless Innovations; some teams that I've heard of before - Something Else, Picture and Radarstation and some that are completlely new to me - Pretty, MovieActive, Enabled and PureGrass. I'm looking forward to the Southern Lab, as this will be the first time we've done Labs in this region, so I won't know any of the teams...

Missed the deadline for Innovation Labs? Content 360 now open for ideas!

The Deadline for Innovation Labs closed last Friday, 12th Jan at 5pm. We've received over 500 ideas, so we're scoring them now, and will be letting the selected project teams know by the end of next week.

But don't worry if you missed the deadline. The BBC is also looking for ideas as part of CONTENT 360 - a EU-wide commissioning project in collaboration with the Milia/MipTV conference in Cannes. The briefs for CONTENT 360 are similar to the Labs briefs - Cross Platform Documentary; Children's Content; Localness on bbc.co.uk; On-Demand Participation; and Teenage Drama & Entertainment.

The Application form is online at the CONTENT 360 site, and the deadline for entries in February 9th. Winning ideas will be invited to Cannes in April to pitch to BBC commissioners at the MIlia/MipTV conference.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS ENDS TOMMORROW!

The deadline for applications is 5pm Friday, January 12th - ie tommorrow! We've had lots of ideas in so far, so keep them coming.

A few people have emailed me saying they'd heard the deadline had been pushed back to late Jan/Feb - this is not true, and I've no idea where that came from. The deadline is tomorrow, so get cracking!

Also, there might be a problem with the application form for some Mac users - if you're having problems, send me your application as a text document using the same format as the application form, and i'll add it to the system. If you send me an application that is not in that format, i won't be able to submit it.

Any other questions or problems, email me asap.

Agenda for London Launch Day - Thursday, November 9th

The sixth Innovation Labs launch day is on Thursday, 9th November at Rich MIx, Bethnal Green Road, London E1 . If you haven't registered already, email Morag Cartwright to reserve a place.

The event will last from 12-5pm, and will consist of presentations from BBC speakers, information about how the Innovation Labs project works, and an idea generating exercise. Its an informal event, aimed at giving all attendees the opportunity to meet, network and ask questions. Here's the agenda:

12:00 - arrival, lunch
12.30 - Matt Locke, Head of Innovation, BBC Future Media & Technology
Introduction to Innovation Labs
Overview of BBC web strategy
Overview of the Briefs for Labs 2006/7
13:00 Dan Heaf, Radio 1; Jason DaPonte, Internet Team, and Ben Evans, CBBC Interactive
Background to briefs from BBC Commissioners
13.20 Brendan Quinn, Business Analyst, BBC Future Media & Technology
Technical architecture and web services at the BBC
13:40 Break
14:00 Idea Generation Exercise
led by Frank Boyd, www.unexpectedmedia.com
16:00 Idea pitching and feedback
17:00 close

The ideas generation and feedback exercises are 'rehearsals', giving attendees the opportunity to explore ideas and test the response of the BBC commissioners. Its a valuable way of finding out about the kinds of things the BBC commissioners want before you develop and submit ideas via the website. This exercise is just a 'rehearsal', however, and is not a replacement for the actual application process on the website. Throughout the afternoon, the BBC attendees will be availble for informal enquiries and questions about the Labs process, briefs and the BBC technical architecture.
