The application process for the 2006/7 Innovation Labs is now closed! The deadline was 5pm, Friday, January 12th. We'll be scoring the applications with the BBC commissioners over the next week or so, and will get back to all winning applications by the end of January.
Thanks for everyone who submitted applications - at first look, there are some fantastic ideas in there, so we're really looking forward to reviewing them and seeing the winners on the Labs.
[**NB some people have reported a bug with the email notification you receive after submitting an application. The company profile information you enter might not appear in the copy of your application in the notification email. Don't worry - the information *is* on the system, there is a bug with the script returning the confirmation email**]
Here are some guidance points for submitting your applications:
Applications are purely textual - no images or other media will be accepted at this stage. This is because we expect a lot of development work to take place during the Lab, so we want you to focus on identifying a clear, insightful idea, rather than spending lots of time on visual design.
We are asking for applications using a 'NABC' approach that is used throughout the BBC. This approach is a simple tool to communicate the core aspects of a creative idea. The tool originated at the Stanford Research Institute, and consists of four elements:
Need - what is the customer need that your idea will address?
Approach - how will the project you propose address these needs?
Benefits - what are the benefits of your approach for the user/client?
Competition - what else is there in the market that addresses the same needs?
Innovation Labs ideas will be judged on how well they answer the briefs in these areas.
The applications will be judged by the BBC Commissioners who have set the briefs. We will score the application on the responses to the NABC questions. In the London and Scotland Labs, the 10 best ideas from each region will be invited to attend the Labs. In the North and South England Labs, each region within the Lab (eg North-West, Yorkshire, South-East etc) will be guaranteed two places - so 8 places on the North England Lab will be taken by the 2 best applications from each region. The remaining 2 places will be taken by the next best applications across the region.
If you have any questions about the application process, please email Matt Locke. We will not be accepting or considering any application material sent outside of the application process for the Innovation Labs.
