BBC 2.0 - refresh
Whilst choosing a new design for BBC 2.0 I wanted the users of the page to have as much control over the page as possible. With this in mind, I brought in my BBC, allowing the user to customize the content they wanted to see. If I was to get my page published onto the BBC, a suitable slogan would be “what you want, when you wantâ€. Another design point I wanted my page to have is to give the user instant access to all major topics, with just a couple of clicks of a mouse. This is where the tool bar comes into use above the top of the page. The precise news boxes allow the user to easily read major headlines and follow a hyperlink to them if they are interested. The boxes are easily changeable so if there are any sudden media changes, it can be done smoothly.
My BBC can do many things to help a user keep track of their media life. For example, you can add programmes to your calendar, so you never miss another important programme. Also, you can set it up so the BBC can retrieve your email from a popular pop server and notify you if you have any new emails.
The “what’s on†box is also another new feature I would add to the BBC pages. It enables the user to select a digital television or radio channel and see what is on for the next two programmes. I would not want it to show any further programmes as if there was a sudden change, then people could get very annoyed with incorrect TV listings.
If I had more time I would want to incorporate more flash enabled programmes into the BBC site, so it not only gives it a good feel, but a professional finish. I would not use it too much, as searches do not scan it but it would be used more, for example in the side toolbar with the radio player. A use of flash for the radio toolbar is to minimise it if you are not interested in hearing any radio services. I would also try to apply the theme to all BBC pages if I had more money and time. This would give a professional feel to the website whilst supplying easy to obtain information to the user.
Thanks for looking at my page, I’ll always accept comments or improvements.
