This is a version for the UK Edition, with a full width splash on the frontpage. All or most of the current information can be displayed, nothing too drastic.
I have made a new "Global Navigation" bar at the top, with links, I think, make the BBC more accessible. I have never understood why there is no link to the news at the top of the current site.
I have brought back My BBC which will allow users to access more from the current message board system, including PM system. My BBC would also incorporate the Talk and Where I Live sections of the current site.
Still adding to it. I will be adding another frontpage to show how the colour scheme would change with the main content at the top.

i like the overall look&feel of your design, altho a bit red-ish. i have no clue as if thats the real studio background youre using or if the bbc news is all red. if it is then good job.
what i dont like is the lack of ideas and creativity, you basicaly just copied the content onto a new layout.
you obviously have the skills, so why not invest a little more effort and creativity? :)
Looks fairly impressive though the site causes horizontal scrolling in 800x600 screen resolution. This isn't ideal as a significant pecentage still use 800x600.

Thanks everyone for your comments, especially v1q, like to see constructive criticism.
The red background, was too much, and I now have a plain white background. I have also added a second design. It focuses on "The Apprentice" programme (link at the top of the web page) with the homepage in the colours of the programme image at the top.
I don't think the current content on BBC.co.uk is too bad, it's the design. They have the right mix of text and images\space. The only idea I had was bringing back My BBC, which a lot of the other designs incorporate too. I suppose with the amount of content the BBC now broadcasts over the Internet, a media browser would be a good addition, so I'm working on that at the moment.

I like the large image across the page - that's a good first impression. I think you could tidy up the buttons and menus below that a bit more.
