BBC Personalized
This site redesign aims at enabling users to apply customization options to the different media through which the BBC provides content - web, TV and radio (what has been uploaded here is a screenshot and not the actual web page).
The basic idea is to have a modular home page, in which users can directly access customised information pertaining to each medium. The levels of customisation will vary, these can only be worked out after a thorough review of the text/image/video/audio combinations possible in each - and I have merely indicated here the possible direction this could take.
Modules pertaining to each of the media could be added or removed. Here, for instance the user has skipped Sports news.
The news module shows a visitor who has opted to receive technology news straight away, but it should also allow customization in differnt ways - a combination of just the main news story and sports headlines, or just sports and technology headlines and stories and so on.
The TV and Radio sections should allow visitors to tap into a database of programmes (not indicated here) which can be filtered in various ways and the delivery form chosen - in terms of programme highlights, feeds, downloads, podcasts, transcripts and so on. The programme content and modes of delivery are so varied that it is sometimes difficult to zero in on the kind of programmes one would like to access online, given the way the BBC portal and related sites are structured now. The search engine does distinguish between random and mainstream programme information but it is difficult to narrow it down to one just one medium or topic. For instance is there a place where I can find information on and view all film related programme across all TV channels? This page should (in part) allow for that kind of a thing. (The example here is books in the case of radio).
The other alternative (indicated here) would be to allow the visitor to opt for certain channels and visit the home page of each to choose the content he would like to be made available in this portion of the page. Once the TV/Radio channel icon is clicked the chosen content should be displayed in this part of the page. Viewing/listening to programmes in part or full, downloading them, bookmarking them and saving them for later downloads should be possible.
The 'interact' module, would enable the user to have save and share information. The bookmarks section could perhaps provide a (shareable?) area for bookmarking all fvaourite (only BBC related?) programme information, sites' home pages, random pages and so on. The briefcase could perhaps be a downloads area, where a user saves actual web pages, clips, audio and video files etc for download. Keyword alerts would be vital tool to keep users informed of a range of new content they would be interested in. This module would also provide a mechanism to select and keep track of what is going on on one's favourite (BBC) blogs and discussion boards. It could also provide for display of one selected feature from the various interactive sections - here the example is 'Have your say.'
This design indicates that access to the customised version of the home page is possible through a radio button click, but a login option may have to be provided.
(Sorry - I haven't been able to work it out in that kind of detail, down to the last pixel!)
