BBC ReInvented
I'll try and keep my description brief!
My design assumes a user is already logged in...
Header:
* Current accessability items included * Date clearly displayed along with account editing options
Search:
* long search bar for increased functionality * AJAX style tabbing to maximise possible search options * BBC iPlayer tab allows user to also search these listings
BBC What's On:
* easily switch between TV and Radio highlights * large image area for promos * AJAX tabs showing all major channels * links allowing user to customise what tabs they see
BBC iPlayer:
* main drawcard of site with possibility to include Flash content within the tabs * obviously there will be no video directly on the home page so all links clicks through to the dedicated iPlayer page * AJAX tabs categorised by subjects of interest rather than channels
BBC News:
* color coded as per current BBC News page * feature news item with links to RSS and ability to add video content to iPlayer * News Wire pulls in absolute latest headlines * Top sports and World news also shown on Top Stories tab * AJAX tabs linking to all major news areas
BBC Me:
* similar to Netvibes and Pageflakes customisable and collapsable content * all preferences are set by user once they register/log-in so they will always be pushed local and subscribed content only
BBC Life:
* this is the entertainment/lifestyle section * this area is essential to offset the more serious content from above * currently, Cinema AJAX tab shown and has links into BBC forums which are also tracked by BBC Me customised content engine
Advert Box:
* as per current BBC site
* this area could also contain Flash content
BBC Browse:
* replicates current BBC directory listing - essential for users who are comfortable with current searching methods
Footer:
* as per current site
General:
* content areas have been colour coded to help retention of key interest areas * minimal use of graphical text, headers etc to minimise download times * simple, clean feel without being overly trendy (thus dating quickly)
Thoughts And Motivations:
My motivation behind this design was based on a few key criteria:
* Usability and Functionality
* Didn't move away too much from the current design * Didn't impact greatly on current users who are comfortable with the current design
My ambition was to create a design that would actually be feasable for the BBC if they were to implement a new interface.
If I had more time and money, I'd like to see a tighter integration of the BBC Me content into all areas of the site. Ideally, all news, sport, video, radio etc would all be tracked and filtered by a database that would then push relevant and suggested content to the user.
I hope you enjoy my design!
Cheers
