I think this design keeps the same feel of the current site while still being very different. The left hand side bar allows room for user-specific content such as local weather information. The top bar is an alteration of the current bbc.co.uk one. The biggest change is the removal of the search box from it. Instead, I was thinking that the search box should become visible over the hover of the word 'Search'. I have also added more sections from the site which wouldn't have fitted before.
The sections on the homepage are now much bolder and cover the key areas of the site. They are also scattered and are not fixed to a table. I think this makes a pleasant change to the norm of having very grid based web pages. I have also gone for a single colour across the page which makes it feel less cluttered.
I did originally include section images i(news, sport) n this design but they didn't fit very well. I think them not being there adds to the designs simplicity.

At least you tried something different and to be honest its more web 2.0 than anything Ive seen so far..most are just a silly little rehash of the current beeb site!
