my BBC Desktop

Krisso

The idea behind this design is, as the name already suggests: A desktop interface for the existing BBC website. The first time you visit the site you will get a standard layout as it is shown on the first picture. From there on, you can completely customize the news site to fit your desires and needs. For an example take a look at picture two.

Through the “Personalize-Tab users can choose Window Themes, Streaming Options, Filter Options, etc and news feeds from all the existing sub sites of the BBC portal.

By dragging the feeds out on the desktop panel, which can be of any size you like, you can individually place windows where you like to, apply filters to their contents (magnifier), resize them, minimize them or simply close them again. By a click on a specific content entry the detailed-entry window pops up and shows the basic text to the user. Again, clicking “More brings up additional information around the specific subject.

Users have total control over what they want to see and what news and information is irrelevant to them. A football fan would like to see only the sport news coupled with the latest entertainment news and customize the look and feel of his desktop to the colours of his football club? Everything is possible with this design.

For BBC this means, not showing all the news content on one site and attacking the user with to much input. BBC still offers all their news inside of the “Personalize-Tab, except the user is able to choose his favourites now. The site would be modular in its structure, easy to maintain and a totally new approach on satisfying the desires of the user – the most important part of the BBC website and its services!

Features:

- Implemented through an Ajax-Framework, so it’s Web2.0 ready and offers content without to much reloading

- Due to the Ajax approach totally modular in structure and layout – also the connectivity is broadly specifiable

- Full desktop interface with drag and drop windows, themes, filters, and a dynamic way to organize things

- A simple start page with a standard layout for people, who don’t want to customize and like to stick with the traditional news layout

- Colour themes stay the same as on the BBC portal for an easy way to identify the areas according to their colours

- A chance for BBC to analyse user specific habits and interests to improve the news quality, appearance, placing and the ways of advertising
