My Beeb

Graham Smith

My vision for the BBC homepage (called My Beeb) is that it exists not only as a web page but also as a PC and Mac desktop "widget" that the user sees once their computer has booted up.

The motivation behind this is to take the BBC site into the Web 2.0 era, where users can write and submit reviews, can join blog communities around BBC programmes. Additionally, the MyBBCPlayer has an iTunes feel about it with the ability for users to create their own playlist of programmes and shows.

The overarching principle of this design is that everything on this homepage is configurable via a personal profile page. This gives it a totally personal feel to the BBC experience.

In terms of the visual treatment, the idea is for the BBC to provide a rich and engaging user experience, which reflects the richness of the content available. Of course, a low graphics version of the site would still be available.

In this scenario, our user called John wants Chelsea news, tech news, nature news and sport to be "delivered" to him each day via his browser and/or to his desktop widget. Similarly, he would like to be informed about when his favorite TV and radio shows are online. These updates are all accessed via the welcome panel on the "My Beeb" page.

The three panels below are all configurable and the reach of the content extends beyond the BBC servers.

"Soap box" is a chance for John to share his thoughts opinions on any piece of news, or write a review about a particular programme.

"My blogs" is a simple configurable directory linking John to his favourite blogs around the web. BeebBlogs are blogs focussed on building communities around BBC programmes and other BBC related topics.

"My web favs" contains Johns favourite web sites, again both from within the BBC and further afield.

The media player allows John to pick his favourite TV and Radio shows and load them into a playlist. This playlist can then be shared with others.
