Well, interesting but white text on light blue doesn't work well.

That's very thought provoking - full kudos for thinking of making the website more accessable.

It’s a good point well made.
One thought I have had watching the entries come in is that attempting to produce one Front-page that caters for – and appeals – to everyone in the UK is probably an impossibility.
Perhaps the answer is not in having a personalised Front-page (which a lot of people wouldn’t bother using or wouldn’t have the confidence to do so) but in having several Front-pages targeted at different audiences, who can then choose the one that appeals/caters to them most.
A variation on choosing Skins perhaps; but one that changes the nature of the pages content as well as its appearance. Or like the idea of newspaper having different supplements to target specific readership interests, but they also read the main sections as well.
Jork’s design (very 60’s ~ groovy baby!) for example could be worked up (lots more diversity of body-shapes/fashions/ethnicity) into an entry point that would appeal to a younger audience, but I doubt would really ‘speak’ to retired people. But I like the core idea.
But it would take a lot of research to identify the differences in browsing habits between different age groups so as to target effectively.

The design causes horizontal scrolling in 800x600 screen resolution. The idea is different, however it looks fairly amateurish with the 'buttons' feeling rather big and bulky.

I like the fact youve not just copied the bbc homepage and actually tried something different as I think what theyre looking for is possibility, not just handing back the same layout thats already there, so kudos to you. It is a tiny bit amateurish looking tho, so id agree with broll there..

Broll,

did you try "view" "smaller text" or similar on your browser.

It is possible to do this automagically with script, however some users prefer a large font.

An earlier version used absolute positioning, however this was removed, so it shouldn't be possible to cause horizontal scrolling, except possibly in extreme cases, please let me know, browser, operating system etc.

Davey & Broll,

regarding amateurish look:

the buttons are meant to be big and bulky, our users have cognitive or learning difficulties. if there are more attractive ones available using CSS and no scripting please let me know.

And please tell me more, though the BBC didn't specify a glossy wonderful finish, they may well expect it ~:"
