My design is more of a wireframe than a graphically designed page. I have included 2 versions – a not logged in and logged in version. To access the logged in version click the login button at the top of the screen. Clicking logout will toggle you back.

The main themes of my design are prominent and context sensitive streaming of premium and live material linked to a high level of personalisation.

--Not logged in version--
The play window takes the prime real estate and when the user navigates to the BBC homepage, BBC1 will begin streaming automatically (but with the sound off as default). An alternative to BBC1 streaming live, would be selected adverts for programmes that have already aired, each complete with a play button that would begin playing the programme in this area. At any point, the user could switch to launching the content in the stand alone player.

The user would be able to channel surf easily by clicking any of the options down the left hand side to start streaming the channel. This area of the screen would also contain the EPG (schedule).

Sitting directly below the main play area, is a space that the BBC can use for advertising premium streamed content. This space is flexible and could allow for a number of configurations – up to 4 promo panels at any one time.

Moving over to the right of the screen, News occupies a permanent, prominent space at the top. The top world stories would cycle through this box, always offering links through to rich material – be it live streamed news or podcasts and discussion forums.

Sport is the next box down the right, but when a user is logged in, they can replace this box with a number of other items, eg Children. As with the News, it should always feature some sort of cyclic streamed material that can be launched from the image. Clicking on the play button for any feature on the screen will launch the content in the play area. If some really big news happened, the BBC News team could takeover the Play, Sport and Local areas to promote the news item if needed.

The Local box bottom right will feature random destinations across the UK when a user is not logged in. A constantly updating moderated series of images of the location taken and uploaded by users to a Flickr type stream would cycle through the image area of this box so users can see what the location is looking like right now. Clicking the play button on the image would take the user to a gallery of recent pictures of this area.

Wherever the word “my” appears in front of an item, it means that the content can be personalised. If a user hasn’t registered and clicks on one of these links, they will be encouraged to sign up for an account for the full service, but will still be able to set some preferences at cookie level should they not wish to subscribe.

A search box is always available top right of the screen and this also has a dropdown box similar to the Google toolbar to search within categories, programmes or media types.

The user has a wide range of options available to them, the key ones being able to create their own channels of content and personalising the type of content they see on their homepage. They should also be able to choose from preset themes in terms of graphic design and/or content.

Users would be able to create their own channels via a mash up of live broadcasting and their favourite programmes already aired but not yet viewed. A small note on this – I think it would be useful to have some sort of visual distinction between links already viewed and those not yet watched.

I really like this design. Its got lots on the page, but it doesn't appear cluttered. Good work!

Nice design and layout, however it needs to be resized. Currently it's causing horitzontal scrolling in 1024 x 768, ideally it should work without horizontal scrolling in 800 x 600.
